Spending time...
Well, maybe that's a too-kind way to put it, but OK, I've been spending a lot of time at the website of music critic Robert Christgau recently. I most certainly don't agree with him all the time (read the reviews of Tom Waits e.g.), but his capsule reviews are like candy or Frito Lay chips--you can't read just one. And when he does unequivocally rave about something, you can be pretty sure it's at least worth a listen. Christgau's review of Eminem's Marshall Mathers LP (he gets it) is exemplary.
(I should point out that Christgau uses the Graduate School grading system on his website: i.e. the worst you can even reasonably get is a B-, and anything lower means you shouldn't even be trying.)

I know! That is actually what drew me in--the fact that I was seeing some albums that I loved (read his reviews of the Smiths!) get ripped on and other albums that I loved get rave reviews. Plus he has a very concise style that I appreciate. Well chosen adjectives. If you read enough of his stuff you'll notice some of his favorite English major words, like "anomie" and "received" (in the sense of a "received" sentiment).
